Cherry Blossom (Prunus Yedoensis)
Somei-Yoshino or Prunus Yedoensis belongs to the rose family (Rosaceae). It usually grows to about 7 meters high. Prunus Yedoensis is a very popular cherry tree in Japan as it grows fast and has beautiful bloom. In spring it first blooms a pale pink colour blossom and by the time the petals are ready to fall has changed to white. (Copy Right: Kokugo Dai Jiten Dictionary. About Shiba-Sakura
(moss pink)
"Sod Cherry" is a direct translation of "Shiba-sakura". It was given this name because of the similarity of it's pink colour blossom. Moss-pink is a herbaceous perennial belonging to polemoniaceous family. Originating in North America, it has often been used as a hedge for a garden bed. It blooms from March till May in Japan covering the ground with its small (about 15 mm in diameter) but thick flowers. About Takachiho Town
Takachiho Town is located on the northern boarder of Miyazaki prefecture in the middle of the Kyushu mountains. This area has been famous for one of the Japanese myths, "creation of Japan". On Takachiho Peak nearby, the god Ninigi-no-Mikoto is said to have descended to earth. Its origin is the source of much speculation. It is estimated that this area has been inhabited from 4,000 years B. C. With a height of 300 meters above sea level, the climate is dynamic with significant change in every season, attracting many visitors. Weeping cherry belongs to Prunus pendula Maxim.f.ascendens Ohwi Family. It has many slim branches hanging down vertically. It sometimes grows as tall as 20 meters high.
